It’s Too Hot For Your Dog

dog heat stroke

As you know, dogs don’t have the ability to sweat. Their only means of cooling themselves down is through panting, and when the summer heat is at its peak, panting cannot cool them down to the full extent that they may need. Dogs are amazing creatures that can tolerate a lot but the heat is nothing to mess with! Pavement, on the hottest days, can reach over 145 degrees fahrenheit- which can actually burn your dog’s paws.

According to PETA, over 94 animals have died from heat-related causes in just 2018 and 2019 alone. This is heart-wrenching because it is 100 percent preventable! Don’t let your dog suffer, stay informed and help your dog enjoy this summer the SAFE way!

Heatstroke prevention

It seems like commonsense when it’s this hot outside, but I’m going to say it anyway – do NOT leave your pups in the car during these hot months, even with the windows down. According to research done by the SPCA a car can reach 120 degrees in as fast as 10 minutes when the weather is only a mere 85. Just don’t even risk it, it’s not worth it.

Outside Dogs

I’m going to be honest, I’m not a supporter of keeping dogs outside, but if your pup HAS to be outside, always provide a wide range of sufficient shade and water! If you can plug a fan in – this is a huge plus. Another idea is to get a large tub (super affordable from Walmart) and fill it with water, or even a kids’ plastic pool is a wonderful way for an outdoor pet to stay cool.

Alternative options to being outside

Sometimes we just have to get creative and try to burn our pups energy in different ways. Here are a few things that we like to do when the weather outside isn’t cooperating!

  • Go for a car ride

  • Teach your pup a new trick

  • Throw the tennis ball or play tug-o-war

  • Go shopping at Home Depot, Micheal’s, Bass Pro Shop or any other dog-friendly place!

If you are anything like me, then you want the physical exercise too! Therefore, if you are going to take your dogs on a walk, make sure to set that alarm extra early and beat the sun or wait until the late evening.

Shopping Guide

If you are going to be out and about with your pup for one reason or another, ensure that you are adequately prepared to face the heat. These are some of our must-haves for the summer!

Now, because we are human and we do make mistakes, be sure to know the signs that your pet could possibly be in distress and experiencing symptoms of overheating. You might see anything from extreme heaving panting or labored breathing, your dog may become listless or even faint. If you notice any of these signs, immediately cover your dog in wet towels, and if possible, apply ice packs to the head and neck, try to get them to drink water and most importantly, contact your vet!

The best motto to decide if the temperature is too hot for your dog, decide if it is too hot for you to be comfortable in and if it is then it’s too harsh for your pup too.

I was surrendered by my owners and was really confused and nervous at first, but with the help of my best friend Indi, I am gaining more confidence and know I am safe. I lived in a house for a while, so if you’re wondering if I have basic obedience, no need to worry! I can sit, stay, shake, come, down, AND I am kennel trained, potty trained, and leash trained. I know, I’m the full package. I am also good with kids and other dog (just not small dogs. I like to play with doggy friends my own size). I am extremely smart, playful, cuddly, and loving.
