“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Gandhi
This quote is by far one of my favorites of all time. Each day I see things that make me feel hopeful, seeing our “greatness” rise through acts of kindness and, in turn, punishment for cruelness. Social media has brought light to and raised awareness for countless unfair and unjust problems for animals. However, right when I feel this hope, I’m squashed with anguish and left feeling defeated.
After learning about the China dog meat festivals, I had literal nightmares. It is truly the things that horror films are made of. I’ll spare you the graphic details, mainly because I cannot bring myself to type them, but I truly encourage you to learn more by clicking here. Anyways, after feeling absolutely hopeless, I learned about an organization called, Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation.
Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on rescuing abused and neglected animals – locally, internationally and throughout the Asian Dog Meat Trade – rehabilitating them and finding them their forever homes. We embrace compassion, education, and legislation to guide hearts and minds toward a brighter future for animals.
A group started by a dog lover, just like you and me, who couldn’t sleep at night knowing what was happening across the world. He had to do something to help, even if he didn’t know what that was. Marc Ching boarded a plane, flew to Asia in hopes of saving as many dogs as he could from their horrific fate.
Not knowing what he was getting himself into, he wanted “to create a place for animals that had been mistreated so they could be given a second chance – a place to be loved, shown compassion, and above all else, a place where they belonged and would be free.” Flash forward years later and their mission became very clear! And in lieu of not giving their information and praise justice, I am pulling this information directly from their site.
In 2015 we extended our reach globally to include rescuing animals from the Asian Dog Meat Trade. These animals are stolen and/or bred into slaughterhouses, meat farms and markets – forced to partake in a trade of torture and exploitation for their meat, bones, fur, etc. We pushed through the trade by going undercover as an international buyer and purchased as many animals as we could – getting them to safety and freedom. Other times we negotiated the closing of a slaughterhouse or a farm and started a cruelty free business there in it’s place. As the rescues continued, we decided to extend our presence and founded Animal Hope and Wellness China. At our China Shelter we have housed thousands of dogs, providing medical attention and a new home. Here they wait until transport to either our Foster Family in Sherman Oaks or another reputable rescue where they are put up for adoption to find their forever homes. Our Foundation educates the next generations to know, understand and teach compassion through animals – they are given an opportunity to view animals as friends and family.
Today, in addition to the extensive work done overseas, Animal Hope and Wellness also is committed to the California area, fighting for dogs in neglect and abuse cases.
The sad reality of the Asian Dog Meat Trade is hard to swallow. But without the work of Animal Hope and Wellness, no changes would even be possible. With their efforts, we see the beginning steps to a better “greatness” for our nations and I am forever thankful.
Please share, follow and help raise awareness for this heroic organization.
